    PHILOSOPHY

An Assorted Selection of Publications on the Topics of “Life” and “Lifestyle”

We at Midori Shobo believe that the essential elements for drawing a roadmap for the future of Japan and all other countries around the world are co-existence and symbiosis. First of all, people and all other living organisms including animals and plants seem like they are living on their own capacity, but in fact are kept alive in the big framework of nature. For example, if you think about meteorological phenomena, humans and animals have almost no means of resisting the forces of nature. Agricultural and fishery yields are easily affected by slight turn of weather conditions, not to mention being at the mercy of heat waves and the fierceness of major earthquakes, tsunamis, and typhoons when they occur. Faced with this immovable fact, mankind should be more modest. And co-existence and symbiosis are the natural and inevitable endpoint of modesty.

When we tackle global issues such as resource depletion and endangered species, we must invoke the spirit of “mutual support” and “moderation,” which has quietly existed in Japanese minds since ancient times. We hope to promote this to the world along with “mottainai,” which has started to gain some attention as an international term. While Japan is losing its once strong vitality, when you come to think of it, we realize that we have the “wisdom” for pioneering our own future and that should be shared with the international community.

Since its foundation in 1960, Midori Shobo has consistently released publications based on the main topic of life. The publication industry is perceived as one of the declining industries in recent years, but however the Internet may prevail, we firmly believe that the ultimate benefit of books is not going away. Be it hardcopy or electronic, books are packages that store knowledge and thoughts developed for further creation of knowledge and thoughts. Midori Shobo will continue to make books as a total package of knowledge, thoughts, and sensibility with the authors and deliver them to readers.

Without the spirit of co-existence and symbiosis that respects the lives of both humans and all other living beings on Earth, we cannot solve international disputes, overcome food crises, or conserve the global environment. We at Midori Shobo will continue to capture the age in the context of “life” and “lifestyle” and deliver diverse publications.
